The BIOSTARS project is a European initiative co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme that aims to support innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth in rural Mediterranean areas. At its heart is the concept of “Bioeconomy Start-up Villages,” which are rural hubs where circular bio-based solutions, social innovation, and entrepreneurship combine to create new economic opportunities. BIOSTARS brings together 9 partners and 10 associated entities from countries including Greece, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Cyprus, working to foster a resource-efficient economy that preserves biodiversity, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and helps rural areas thrive.
A central element of the project is the BIOSTARS Toolbox — a practical set of tested tools and methodologies drawn from successful EU projects such as BIOLOC and REVIVE — designed to guide local stakeholders in establishing or transforming their communities into vibrant bioeconomy hubs. Through training, knowledge exchange, and collaboration between policymakers, entrepreneurs, investors, and local residents, BIOSTARS seeks to create jobs, retain talent, and empower especially young people and women to lead sustainable ventures in their regions. This collaborative effort is helping to build stronger transnational networks and laying the groundwork for long-term, resilient rural development across the Mediterranean.
